Network Solutions Domain Transfers

Yes, they will take the fully announced 3!!!! days to get you an EPP code to transfer your domain. Get over it now so you don't have to when you pull the trigger. Yes, they will take another 3 days to actually transfer your domain once you acknowledge that the transfer is valid (don't forget to login to netsol after they send you their whiny 'are you sure? Here's how to cancel the tranfer' message because it's actually where you acknowledge the transfer as well. There are some perfectly fine registrars out there. Try this one: www.namecheap.com

Inkscape attempts to show gui dialog during batch conversion

Attempting to convert an AutoCAD .dxf file to SVG with inkscape on a headless linux virtual host, the program crashes in a massive heap of text which appear to be trying to interact with the X display.
After installing Xvfb to see what it was displaying, I found this to be a file import setting dialog box asking about the scale of the image.

Looking in <inkscape home>/inkscape/extensions/dxf_input.inx there is a section specifiying the settings for this dialog. To bypass the display of the modal dialog, I commented out the entire section of <param> tags. This will reduce capability in the GUI version of the program but I am using it only for command line purposes on this project.

A better solution would be to accept the defaults when a headless display is detected or the -z argument is passed to inkscape.

Namecheap permission delegation

Namecheap's method for delegating permissions on a domain to other users appears to be very useful, however the naming convention somewhat eludes me.

  • If you want to allow modification of ANY of your dns records, you need to add "All Host Records" as the permission.
  • If you want to allow moving the NS records off of namecheap or back again, then you want the Edit DNS Entries, and the transfer to/back permissions
